The Republican leaders have talked incessantly about decreasing tax rates to create jobs. Actually, Republican policies have resulted in job losses in NC.
- Budget cuts at the universities in 2010-2012 resulted in a loss of 3,000 jobs.
- The number of employees at state agencies dropped from 70,823 in 2008 to 65,640 in 2013.
- Approximately 4000 teacher aides have been cut
- It has been estimated that the expansion of Medicaid in North Carolina would have created 43,000 jobs by 2020, added about $862 million in tax revenues, and increased business activity by more than $21 billion. Since the Republican leaders refused to expand Medicaid, these jobs have been lost.
- Job losses have also occurred at hospitals that have closed or reduced staff, partly because of the lack of Medicaid expansion, which would have brought more patients and revenue to the hospitals.
- Volvo considered North Carolina as the location for a $500 million plant, its first auto manufacturing plant in North America. The plant would hire about 2,000 workers, and additional workers would be hired by Volvo suppliers who would locate plants nearby. Volvo decided instead to locate the plant in South Carolina.
- PayPal cancelled plans to open a new global payment center in Charlotte, which was expected to bring 400 new jobs to the city. PayPal had also planned $3.6 million in investments at the planned site.
- There was an incentive program for film production which resulted in many films being produced in North Carolina. The Republican leaders allowed this incentive program to expire in 2015 and replaced it with a smaller grant program. Some analysts have estimated that about 4,000 jobs were lost because of this action.
- The NBA moved the 2017 all star game from Charlotte, resulting in a $!00 million loss for the city
- Decisions by Republican leaders at the federal level have resulted in the loss of civilian jobs at military installations.
- Also at the federal level, Senate Republicans recently blocked an “insourcing” bill from Democrats that would have ended tax breaks for companies that move jobs overseas. The “Bring Jobs Home Act” also would have given tax incentives to companies that bring jobs back to the United States.
- The shutdown of the government by Republican leaders in 2013 also cost North Carolina some jobs.
The policies implemented by the Republican leaders are not working; it is time to pursue policies that will result in real job creation in North Carolina. VOTE DEMOCRATIC!!
