There is a sales tax that does affect high income families: it is the sales tax on yachts and aircraft, items that are beyond the financial reach of most middle income families. The sales tax rate is 3%, not 4.75%, with a cap of $1,500. Thus, the Republican leaders have given us a tax system that taxes middle income families that purchase mobile homes at a higher rate, with no cap, while high income families that purchase yachts and boats have a lower rate, with a cap. This “reverse Robin Hood” approach is not fair to middle income families in North Carolina.
